With festival season fully underway we’ve got a summer lined up that well and truly spoils us musically, but there’s one set that stands head and shoulders above the rest, ne set we’re looking forward to the most, the holy grail of Hip Hop if you will, and that’s the mighty Nas performing his seminal 1994 album Illmatic in honour of it’s twentieth anniversary. Still his finest output in our eyes, his debut album told the tales of the Bronx streets around him as they’d never been told before; as poetic as they are gutter, as exciting as they are unnerving. Spoken through a flow with such natural ease that it’s just a joy to listen to the chance to see one of Hip Hop’s finest ever perform a throwback set of that material is simply unmissable, so it’s really no wonder we’ll be making our plot by the speakers on the Saturday of Lovebox Festival, which runs next weekend from Friday 18th to Saturday 19th July.
Add to that the likes of Bonobo, Joey Bada$$, Soul 2 Soul, Scuba, Norman Jay, David Rodigan, Madlib, EZ and Submotion Orchestra – to name just a few - and you’re left with an unbeatable lineup that caters for the most diverse of crews. All of London’s musical tribes will be out in full force, a diverse atmosphere that makes Lovebox the party that it is, it’s crowd musically focused but not afraid to step forward from the back and let loose. Set in the ideal festival surroundings of Victoria Park, summer’s dust is kicked up by worn trainers promised their ‘last hoorah’ as beers flow and the speakers pump ferociously, we simply can’t wait.
