Fresh Talent: Overlook Interview/Mix

by • March 15, 2011 • Blog, Guest Mix, Interviews, Music

I first chatted to Bournemouth based producer Overlook around a year ago when he was interested in a slot at one of our nights, and it was also around that time that he’d just started producing. So it’s pretty mad that in just over a year behind a DAW he’s had a few tunes signed digitally to labels such as Broken Audio, IM:Ltd and DSCI4, and even more unbelievable that he’s just signed a limited 7” release on Loxy’s label CX. He answered a few questions for us and hooked us up a little guest mix with some seriously moody dubs!
Overlook Fresh Talent: Overlook Interview/Mix
Easy Jason, Tell us a bit about yourself firstly, how old are you, where you from, and what are your interests?
Hello! I just turned 19 in February an I’m from sunny bournemouth! I just enjoy watching movies and listening to music 24/7 really.

How long have you been into d&b, and when did you start producing?
I’ve been into drum and bass for about 4 years now, started on the jump up stuff but things got a bit deeper as time passed. I’ve been producing for about a year and 5 months or so!

What three albums couldn’t you live without?
I would say, Eric B & Rakim – Paid In Full, Wu-Tang – Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) & Massive Attack – Blue Lines.

Who are your main musical inspirations?
D&B wise i’d say Ed Rush & Optical, Konflict, Data, Loxy, Doc Scott and D-Bridge, but there’s just too many to mention really! In other genres I’m influenced by so much, Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, Jimi Hendrix, Martha & The Vandellas, Ray Charles, Vangelis, literally everything influences me!

What equipment do you use?
For production I just use Reason 5 at the moment, but I’ll be moving on to Cubase & Native Instruments this year i think.

How would you describe your sound?
This is a hard one, as it changes depending on the mood im in, but anything from Deep minimal stuff to some heavy dancefloor bits, I like to dabble in everything really!

Overlook & Mono – Naive by Overlook.

Have you had any releases yet, or got anything forthcoming?
I have a tune coming out on IM:Ltd called ”Memento” with a great artist called Cohere and I’ve also signed tracks to Broken Audio with local artist and a close friend called Mono. Just today I signed 2 more tracks, one with Cohere which is coming on the new ”Spy Technologies 6” CD is released by DSCI4, and a solo track called ”Shibito” which will be coming on Loxy’s label CX in limited edition 7” vinyl and digital formats.

Cohere & Overlook – Memento [IM:LTD] by Overlook.

If you could have a release on any one label, who would it be?
I think it would have to be either Metalheadz or 31 records.

Where are you planning on taking things in 2011?
This year I just plan to keep working hard on music and fingers crossed people like it! I’ll be starting a project with 2 great producers who I can’t reveal the names of as yet, but keep an eye out!

Any last words or shouts?
Will have to give some shouts to the bournemouth lot, Judda, Lecta & Krakota, also to Loxy, Trace, Mono, Cpr, War, Mateba and Fade. Once again there is just too many people to mention so thank you to everyone. Cheers!
