If you haven’t already checked out Flexout Audio, I strongly suggest you do. Run by Lincoln based producer/DJ duo, Retraflex (Tom and Stephen), the label has been gaining momentum since its first release of July last year. Things are looking exciting over the next 12 months. Here I catch up with Tom from Retraflex to find out a bit more about who they are and what they’ve got in store for us. He also jumped on the decks to do a guest mix for us (link included at the bottom)…
Intro & Interview by Victoria Freeth.
Firstly, tell us a bit about you and Stephen, what led you two to start Flexout Audio together?
Easy now! Well its quite a long story but I’ll try and condense it down to the basics! I went to Lincoln University, Stephen was running a local drum and bass night called ‘Cutz’ with Flexout co-founder Jon (DJ Apocalypse). I became a resident DJ at ‘Cutz’ and then myself and DJ Apocalypse got some funding from a University business scholarship scheme and started another club night and called it Flexout! At that time Stephen was going under the DJ name of ‘Kronic’ and would mix back to back with Jon (DJ Apocalypse). In 2009 Jon unexpectedly passed away and this bought the two of us a lot closer and it was not long after me and Stephen decided we would produce/DJ together and formed Retraflex.
How would you describe Flexouts sound?
I suppose the sound of Flexout Audio is actually a very versatile one, mainly because we just release the music that we like and there aren’t really any rules but it is essentially a label showcasing the full spectrum of drum and bass, however we do dabble in different BPM’s because for us we want to release the versatile, exciting bass driven beats that you would hear in a Retraflex set.
What have you got planned for 2012?
In general terms we just plan to release quality music from artists in the Flexout crew and to put on some sick parties that showcase our sound in London. We’ve been running night in Lincoln for over 3 years now and its time to move on. We’re just about to move venue to a grimey unused bassment cellar underneath Tokyo Nightclub in Lincoln which is going to be cool but in January this year we did a club night in London with Kmag where we showcased the label and its sound and that was ace! After that we decided to do more stuff in London and have just organised our first event at The Brixton Jamm on July 21st 2012. Dj’s on the night include ourselves and Ben Fawce, Need For Mirrors, dRamatic & dbAudio, eleven8, Rutile and the rest of the Flexout crew with a special guest appearance from Kenny Ken!
Which artists do you have releasing on Flexout?
A fair few! Our core artists apart from ourselves are Rutile, Fawce & Fine but I suppose the best way to get an idea of what artists are releasing on Flexout is to look at our release schedule. Our last release was out on the 30th March, an EP called ‘Future Dreams’ by Philth. It’s got a Need For Mirrors remix on it that has been getting a lot of support. We’ve currently got Serum in the studio whose doing a remix of ‘Apocalypse’ which is a track we did with Ben Fawce and $pyda. There is also a 6 track EP coming out in May from dRamatic & dbAudio called ‘The Indian Summer EP’ which we’re really looking forward too. One of our core artists, Rutile, has an EP coming out in July which includes a remix from eleven8 whom we also work very closely with (Big up Edd!). Then there’s a couple of chaps from Nottingham called Chromatic who we’ve known for a long long time, they’re in the studio working on an EP for Flexout Audio too….So yeah, we’ve basically got a mixture of stuff from up and coming artists with input from some more established names within the scene – lots of music that we strongly believe in is to be released this year and we’re really excited about it!
