One of the most open and soulful records from an artist renowned for his honesty and truth, Common’s The Light brings a whole host of our favourite artists into one interlinked story. Woven around the Soulquarians collective which included legendary lyricists such as Common, Mos Def, Q Tip, Talib Kweli Erykah Badu and D’Angelo and second to none beatmakers such as Questlove, James Poyser and J Dilla, it was the latter’s beat that set the tone for the single that became one of the shining lights of Common’s Like Water For Chocolate album. Here in the video below, those very same names talk on how the single came together in the seminal Electric Lady Studios studio, how Common came across the beat and even the thoughts of Boby Caldwell who was sampled for the effortlessly catchy hook. History right here.
