Tay Devenny- Scriptures

Eastbourne based MC Tay Devenny just dropped his debut EP, a five track soulful EP entitled Scriptures. His first release, it’s a dope, fairly accomplished offering where he flows nicely over beats from AMP, The Stuyvecents, M Phazes, Vanilla and Bibio. They’re all fairly traditional hip hop beats, MPC joints with that could be accused of not the most original samples, but classics nonetheless, aside from the final track, Colours, which is a fast, bouncy, indie influenced tune that brings out a dope, more melody based and infectious vocal style from Tay.
As a whole release, it moves well from the hard, more aggy sounds of the opening track, Scriptures, through the more sunny day melodies of Sound of the Stuy and Unthinkables. It mellows out for the following minute long skit, Lucid Dreaming, where Tay provides a laid back vocal which leads nicely into the aforementioned Colours, a track reminiscent of Jamie T’s Panic Prevention.
It’s an EP that left me wanting to hear more from this young MC. It’s very listenable, decent quality home grown hip hop already with a nice, passion tinged vocal style, but with a greater range of beats he could really come into his own. Check it out below or over at his Bandcamp.
