Tilt x Au Vieux Panier Hotel- Panic Room

The Au Vieux Penier hotel in Marseilles, France, has five rooms which are slightly more interesting then your average crash pad, in that each one is decorated by an internationally renowned creatives and re-conceptualized each year. It’s a marketing tactic that I have no doubt will be effective, but on top of that it’s also providing some amazing visuals for the art world to salivate over, and promises a unique experience to any one with the cash to shed. Hotels tend to be fairly standardized in their decor and have a habit of becoming fairly repetitive (unless of course, you can afford to splash out on one of these) so adding individuality’s something I’m all for.

The most recent artist to grace one of their rooms is Toulouse based graff writer Tilt with an installation called Panic Room. He decided to juxtapose the chaos of over graffitied walls with spotlessly white minimalist design in an attempt to show that even the anarchic tagging form of graffiti most hated by the general public can be appreciated in the right place. The best thing about it for me is how perfectly it’s split right down the middle, nothing’s been left untouched from walls through furniture all the way to small bedside trinkets. The small canvases featured in the blank side of the room, which highlight the essence of the other half, are also a really nice touch.
